Suction-assisted lipectomy is a technique to remove localized collections of excess fat. Fat deposits on hips, things, buttocks and abdomen, as well as on arms, knees, calves, upper torso, neck and under the chin, can be removed. Suction-assisted lipectomy is not a substitute for weight reduction that can be attained through dieting and exercise, nor is it a cure for obesity. It is a surgical technique suitable for carefully selected patients. I may recommend surgical lipectomy, in which excess skin and fat are removed,instead of, or in addition to suction-assisted lipectomy. Suction-assisted lipectomy typically is performed on a patient of relatively normal body build and weight to reduce disproportionately large hips, buttocks and things, a protruding abdomen or“love handles”above the waist. These changes as well as removal of fat on arms, calves, and knees, above the breasts and under the chin, often can be made during a single operation.

| Features | Suction-assisted lipectomy may be performed under a local anesthetic which numbs the area to be treated or a general anesthetic may be used. Medication to relieve tension is given before the anesthetic is administered. The sedative and local anesthetic allow you to be comfortable during surgery. If a general anesthetic has been administered, you will sleep through the entire operation. Surgery begins with incisions of about one-half-inch in length made in the area where suction-assisted lipectomy will be performed. Following surgery, a snug dressing of elastic gauze may be applied over the entire treated area to promote skin shrinkage to conform smoothly to the shape of the underlying tissue.In some instances,a long-length corest-like garment is used to secure firm compression to the area to reduce swlling and skin discoloration. Depending on the extent of the surgery,the procedure usually lasts from 45 minutes to two hours or longer. Although you may be up and about in a day or two after surgery, I will advise you on the proper schedule for resuming your usual routine. To permit proper healing, you should avoid overactivity and straining for three to four weeks. The decision on when to return to work and normal activities depends on how fast you heal and how you feel. |
